Accidental seedlings discovered by 1600 were introduced to Japan on 1872. It was introduced to China in about 1905, and by 1980, Guoguang apple planting in Beijing had accounted for 50-60% of the total apple planting area.

It was not until the introduction of Red Fuji varieties that the planting area of Guoguang decreased year by year. Since the early 1950s, Guoguang apples have been planted in Chengde, Hebei Province, mainly distributed in Chengde County, Pingquan County and Kuancheng County. Because of its strong adaptability, high yield and good taste, Guoguang Apple has a long-standing reputation, collectively known as "Chengde Guoguang".
