Huang Jinguo (also known as "Hort 16A") originated from the original germplasm resources introduced by kiwifruit breeding program started by New Zealand Ministry of Science and Industry (later Hort Research) in 1970s. From June of 1987 to June of 10, Mark McNeil Lager conducted a hybridization experiment in Kumeu Orchard, New Zealand. The parents are Actinidia chinensis "CK-01"(seedlings introduced by Don McKenzie from Beijing Botanical Garden in June 1997) and Actinidia chinensis "CK-15" (1988), and the hybrid combination F 1 60. 199 1 year, Russel Lowe and Hinga Marsh screened out "Hort 16A" superior plants, and planted them in small scale before 1995. In the preliminary test, the yield, fruit size and sensory characteristics of this strain showed superior traits. 1995, Hort Research applied for the variety right in the name of "Earligold" and obtained the approval number (approval number "1056"), which was later changed to "Hort 16A".
1996, Huang Jinguo ("HORT 16A") was planted in a large area. 1998 was successfully tried for the first time in Japan, and now it has been sold in the international market under the brand of "ZESPRI GOLD". Zespri Company of New Zealand owns the exclusive distribution right of this variety. Subsequently, New Zealand developed a lot in China, and also authorized planting in Italy, China, the United States and Japan (Zespri Company of New Zealand, 200 1).
