Chemical Composition of Sasanqua

Triterpenoids: Pentacyclic triterpenoids and tetracyclic triterpenoids are the main triterpenoids isolated from the genus Sasanqua. Zhang Zhongping et al. successively obtained lupulenone, taraxasterone and a pentacyclic triterpenoid compound of isooleanocarpane type, iso-taraxasterone, from the ethanol extract of the root of Stony saxifrage produced in Shandong. Lupulenone, lupine dilute alcohol acetate and cork ketone were isolated from the roots of Dolichospermum saxifrage by Zhao Kueijun et al. Taraxasterone was isolated from the dried roots of Shandong Lunya salsify and salsify. Lupulenone and 24-methylenecycloartanol acetate were isolated from the medicinal plants of Salvia miltiorrhiza from the Changbai Mountains in the middle of China, such as Rotifolia salsify, Changbai salsify, Willow-leaf salsify, and Numa salsify. Cycloartenol acetate and lupenone were isolated from apricot leaf salvia.

Coumarins and phenolic acids: Two coumarins, (+)-praeruptorin A and 3'-angeloyl-4'-isovaleryl-(3'S,4 'S)CIS-khellactone.Kuang Haixue et al. isolated three phenolic glycosides named Shashenosides I, II, and III from A. tetraphylla.Wang Shuqin et al. isolated benzoic acid, vanillic acid, and 3-methoxy-benzoic acid-4-beta-D-glucoside from the roots of Nansha ginseng.

Sterols: The plants of Salvia miltiorrhiza generally contain this kind of components, and He Youli et al. reported that the content of β-sitosterol in Xifeng Salvia miltiorrhiza was more than 0.101%, which was the first one according to many kinds of Salvia miltiorrhiza. Zhao Kujun et al. isolated hexadecanoic acid-3-β-sitosterol ester and octadecanoic acid-3-β-sitosterol ester for the first time from the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza. Both β-sitosterol and carotenoid glycosides were obtained from stone saxifrage, saxifrage and fine-leaved saxifrage.

Polysaccharides: The genus Sasanqua contains a large number of polysaccharide components. Chen Zhanguo et al. determined that the total polysaccharide content of Taibai pickled ginseng was 42.72% by phenol-sulfuric acid method, which was significantly higher than that of other ginseng plants. The results of Tu Pengfei et al. showed that the polysaccharide content of 10 sand ginsengs, such as silky sand ginseng, reached more than 50.0%, indicating that Nansha ginseng contains a large amount of polysaccharides. Zhang Zongping et al. obtained sucrose and glucose from fine-leaved salsify.

Amino acids and trace elements: The amino acid content of the two species of Salvia miltiorrhiza was tested and analyzed, and the results showed that both of them contained 18 amino acids such as threonine, lysine, etc., of which 7 were essential amino acids, and the whorled-leaf Salvia miltiorrhiza contained about 20 essential macronutrients and trace elements, among which the contents of Ca, K, Mg, Si, Fe, and P were all higher.
