This summer vacation, my mother took me to my grandmother’s house in the countryside of Lai’an County. We got off the bus with silver hair. The frail grandma was already waiting at the intersection. Walking on the familiar country road leading to the village, I saw my grandma’s steps were so steady.
The path at my grandma’s house is paved with sand and gravel. The entire several-kilometer-long path is very narrow and can only accommodate one car. Due to the pressure of vehicles, the road surface is bumpy and uneven. This gravel road, built in the late 1970s, has always been the only way for the whole village to connect to the outside world. It is precisely because of the inconvenient transportation that I usually don't want to go to my grandma's house or walk on the path where I can easily fall if I'm not careful.
We walked on the country road for less than twenty minutes. My feet stopped working and I staggered as I walked. Grandma walked up to me and knelt down. When my mother saw this, she glared at me and said, "Don't ask grandma to carry her." At this time, grandma glared at mother and said, the child is still young, walking on such a small road in the city, the country people work every day, carrying a child is nothing. I climbed onto my grandma's warm back, and before I had gone far, I felt that she was out of breath. Time is not forgiving after two years of absence. Grandma has become much older and her hearing is also declining. When speaking to her, she has to raise her voice. At this time, I insisted on letting my grandma put me down, and I couldn't let her work so hard.
I got off my grandma’s back, gritted my teeth and insisted on walking by myself. Grandma told my mother and me on the way; at the end of this year, this country road will be replaced by a cement road. Hearing this, I felt happy and kept saying, "Okay, I won't have to walk on the gravel road again when I come back." However, I saw my grandma sighing, with a look of disappointment on her face.
My grandma told me that my mother once boarded the train heading north from this path alone and began to live a "Northern Drift" life. In those years, when the Spring Festival came, my grandmother would stand at the intersection, waiting for my mother to return and reunite. More than 20 years ago, my uncle also set out from this path, carrying two thousand yuan borrowed by his grandmother from the neighbors, and went south to Guangzhou to pan for gold. The gold was not mined, and the uncle was defrauded of all his money. Grandma spent several years working hard day and night to pay back the borrowed money. A few years ago, my grandpa got sick, and my grandma was also on this road. She used a cart to drag grandpa to the town health center for a week to get water. Along the way, grandma told many stories about her and this path.
A few days later, my mother and I left my grandma’s house. My uncle drove his BMW and a red tractor to see us off. When the tractor drove up the uneven road, I was knocked upside down. My internal organs and lungs were about to pop out. I inadvertently looked back and saw my grandma standing at the entrance of the village watching us off. Sitting in the car, I looked at my grandma and the path passing by in the distance, and I couldn't help but say, Goodbye, this road has... This country road that I have a grandma complex about.
