Researchers found that people who drink soda at least twice a week have a 49% higher risk of diabetes than those who drink less soda. This is the conclusion after considering age, smoking, drinking, exercise and other risk factors related to diabetes.
Extended data
A study by Caroline Medical College in Sweden shows that Diet Coke is "just as bad" as Coke. Drinking two cups a day will double the risk of diabetes.
The results show that compared with volunteers who don't drink drinks, volunteers who drink two or more sweet drinks every day have 2.4 times the risk of developing type II diabetes than volunteers who don't drink drinks. Sweet drinks include sugary drinks and drinks with artificial sweeteners, the latter including sugar-free cola and sugar-free liqueur. Volunteers who drink five or more sugar-free drinks a day have a 4.5-fold increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
