The total length of the Yangtze River is more than 6,300 kilometers, more than 800 kilometers longer than the Yellow River, and ranks third in the world among the world's great rivers in length after the Nile River in Africa and the Amazon River in South America. However, while the Nile River basin spans nine countries in Africa and the Amazon River basin spans seven countries in South America, the Yangtze River is unique to China.
The Yangtze River originates from the "roof of the world" - the southwest side of the Tanggula Mountain Range of the Tibetan Plateau, is the mother river of the Chinese nation. It flows through 11 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, including Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shanghai, and is injected into the East China Sea east of Chongming Island.
The main stream of the Yangtze River runs from west to east across central China. Hundreds of tributaries converge in the north and south, extending to parts of eight provinces and autonomous regions, namely, Guizhou, Gansu, Shaanxi, Henan, Guangxi, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Fujian.
