The hole of adductor tendon continues in the femoral artery, deep and adjacent to the femoral fat surface and the posterior part of the knee joint capsule. Obliquely outward along the outer edge of semitendinosus muscle, horizontally staying in the middle of the posterior knee until the femoral intercondylar fossa, and then vertically descending to the lower edge of hamstring muscle, which is divided into anterior tibial artery and posterior tibial artery.

Besides the muscular branches adjacent to the muscles, the artery also has five joint branches, namely, medial and lateral superior genicular arteries, middle genicular arteries and medial and lateral superior genicular arteries, which all participate in the formation of the arterial network of the knee joint. Because the upper part of popliteal artery is closely related to femoral surface, popliteal artery may be damaged when supracondylar fracture of femur occurs.
