Climatic adaptability of folk houses in southern Henan Province
Due to the particularity of geographical and climatic conditions (wet and rainy) and the blending of north and south history and culture, the characteristics of residential buildings in southern Henan are that the north shows the resilience of northern residential buildings and the south shows the beauty of southern residential buildings. Specifically, the houses represented by Xinyang City and Xixian County have obvious northern characteristics, spacious courtyards and wings on both sides of the door. The residential houses represented by Xinxian County have obvious Huizhou style, with white walls and blue tiles, a well-shaped courtyard with cloisters on all sides. In terms of spatial layout, it embodies the regional cultural characteristics of southern Henan. Get rid of the constraints of terrain conditions, the plane layout is symmetrical with the central axis, and the functional layout is orderly. The layout and height of the left and right wing rooms are different because of the geomantic culture of "the blue dragon is towering and the white tiger doesn't look up". Hall is the most important single building in the combination of residential buildings in southern Henan. It is not only reflected in the spatial volume, but also in the human behavior pattern. The main hall is used to worship ancestors and entertain guests. In order to show respect, the hall is generally not allowed to cross. Based on this orientation, there is a thought of "attaching importance to the left" in the folk culture in southern Henan. In any direction, the left wing is generally higher than the right wing. One is the need of ventilation and lighting, and the other is the influence of traditional geomantic culture. In addition, it is also reflected in the use function, the kitchen is usually on the left, and the utility room, animal pen or toilet is mostly on the right. Although the modern concept of life has already surpassed this principle, the traditional thought of "attaching importance to the left and neglecting the right" still exists.
