Why

More than 2 million years ago, Taiwan Province was still in the sea. Sandstone layers were piled up by the sediment washed down from Fujian in mainland China, and the rock layers were pushed out of the sea by the orogeny 6 million years ago, resulting in Taiwan Province Island, of which yehliu is a part.

During the orogenic compression, two faults were pushed out on both sides of yehliu, and the fault zone was easily eroded, so both sides were recessed into a bay, and a promontory was formed in the middle.

Next, under the erosion of waves, rain and wind and the continuous uplift of the earth's crust, the strange rocks and rocks in yehliu are created.

Geological features

The geological structures in yehliu mostly belong to the Cenozoic Miocene Daliao stratum (rich in foraminifera, shellfish and sea urchin), and the rock stratum is mainly composed of thick massive sandstone and shale with different thickness, or interbedded with sand sheets and rocks, and the strata are interbedded with sandstone, shale, calcareous sandstone, sand and shale from top to bottom.

calcareous sandstone contains round or irregular calcareous nodules, so it has the strongest erosion resistance, followed by sandstone, and shale is the most fragile and easily eroded. As a result of long-term differential erosion, various strange rocks and rocks in yehliu have been formed.

"nodule": More than 2 million years ago, the rock stratum was piled up on the seabed, and some creatures such as shellfish and sea urchins lived on it. After their death, calcium carbonate in the bones gathered in the rock stratum into lumps, which were the core, and other calcium carbonate and organic substances brought by groundwater were tightly cemented to form nodules. Because nodules are very hard, when the surrounding sandstone is eroded away, it will be exposed to the surface.
