The math symbol * means multiplication sign. * also means a number other than 0. Example: N* means a positive integer .
There are two symbols that we now commonly use for multiplication operations, one is "x" and the other is "-". The "x" was first introduced by the English mathematician Orette in 1631, and the "-" was pioneered by the English mathematician Heriot.

In Microsoft Word can be inserted into the general application of the conditions of all mathematical symbols, Word2010 and 2010 version of the software above as an example of the operation:
Open the Word2010 document window, click on the need to add mathematical symbols formula, and insert the bar cursor positioned to the target location.
In the "Formula Tools / Design" ribbon of the "Symbols" group, click the "Other" button to open the Symbols Panel. The Basic Math Symbols panel is displayed by default. Users can find the most frequently used math symbols in the Basic Math Symbols panel. Similarly, you can type √ by pressing Alt+41420 (i.e., pressing Alt, pressing 41420 (the keypad), and finally releasing Alt).
