Oat milk is not milk.
Oat milk is not milk, nor is it oats. Although it is called "milk", "oat milk" has nothing to do with milk at all. It is only because the color and texture are more like milk, that's why it is called "oat milk". In fact, its real name is "oat milk", similar to the familiar "almond milk". Oat milk, also known as "plant milk," is a gluten-free cereal drink made from oats.
Oat milk is a plant-based milk derived from whole oats (Avena spp) grain by extracting plant material with water. Oat milk has a creamy texture and mild oatmeal flavor and is made in a variety of flavors such as sweet, unsweet, vanilla and chocolate.
Introduction to the history of oat milk:
Unlike other plant-based milks, which originated as early as the 13th century, oat milk was developed by Swedish scientists in the 1990s. oat milk sales in the United States increased 10-fold from 2017 to 2019, and one major manufacturer, Oatly, reported that its global sales increased by tripled. By the end of 2020, the oat milk market became the second-largest plant-based milk market in the U.S., behind leading almond milk, but outselling soy milk.
By 2020, oat milk products include coffee creamers, yogurt substitutes, ice cream and chocolate. Oat milk can be used to replace dairy products in a vegan diet or in dairy-incompatible medical conditions. Compared to cow's milk and other plant-based beverages, oat milk has a relatively low environmental impact because it requires relatively little land and water for its production.
