Morphological features biennial herb, 1 ~ 1.5 meters high. The main root is fat and fleshy. Root leaves are clustered, broad heart-ovate, 40～50 cm long; the leaves on the upper part of the stem gradually become smaller, the surface of the leaf blade has longitudinal grooves, the reverse side is densely gray-white downy, the edge is slightly undulate or toothed. Headed flowers purple, borne at branch tips, bracts lanceolate or linear, apex prolonged into hooked needles, multiseriate, open in all directions into a globe of hooked spines. Achenes oblong, slightly curved, slightly trigonous, gray-brown. The fruit is used as medicine, harvested in the fall and dried in the sun.
