ferritin is a soluble tissue protein for storing iron in the body. Normal human serum contains a small amount of ferritin, but different detection methods have different normal values. The average normal value is about 8-13 ug/L (8-13 ng/mL) for men and 35-55 ug/L (35-55 ug/L) for women. Acute and chronic liver damage and liver cancer increase, and the positive rate of liver cancer patients reported in China is as high as 9%. In recent years, it has been found that liver cancer also contains an acidic isoferritin, called carcinoembryonic isoferritin, which may be helpful for early diagnosis. The reasons for the increase of ferritin in liver cancer patients may be as follows: ① Liver cancer cells can synthesize and secrete ferritin or isoferritin; ② The uptake and clearance of ferritin by liver cancer tissues are affected; ③ Liver cells are damaged and necrotic. Serum ferritin decreases in patients with liver cancer who are effective in treatment, but increases in patients with deterioration and recurrence, and is poor after continuous increase. Therefore, serum ferritin measurement can be used as one of the means to monitor the curative effect. It is especially significant for AFP negative patients. Serum ferritin is the most sensitive index to check the iron deficiency in the body. The ferritin in the liver accounts for about 1/3 of the iron stored in the body, and the ferritin in the blood circulation is removed by liver cells, so the serum ferritin can increase during liver disease. In addition, the amount of ferritin synthesized by malignant tumor cells increases, so ferritin is also one of the markers of malignant tumors.
