The history of four dishes and one soup
"Four dishes and one soup" can be traced back to the Ming Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. This peasant-born "local tyrant", once a monk, had to make a living, starting from the bottom and knowing the sufferings of ordinary people.

In A.D. 1368, after Zhu Yuanzhang became the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, he encountered natural disasters, and there was no harvest in all parts of the country, making the lives of ordinary people very difficult. At this time, some dignitaries lived a life of luxury day by day. Zhu Yuanzhang, who grew up in a poor family, knew the hardships of people's lives and made up his mind to rectify this extravagant life.

One day, Ma Huanghou, Zhu Yuanzhang's wife, was born, and all the ministers congratulated him with generous gifts. Zhu Yuanzhang planned to put on a simple meal to entertain the guests. A dish is radish, and there is a folk saying that "radish is listed and pharmacies are closed", which is enough to show that radish is a good dish.

The second dish is fried leek, which is full of vitality and evergreen all the year round, symbolizing the long-term stability of the country. The third course is green vegetables, and the fourth course is chopped green onion mixed with tofu, plus a bowl of clear soup. The intention is obvious. Officials should be honest and clean, not corrupt, and think more about the lives of the people.

Everyone is afraid to eat when they see it. Finally, Zhu Yuanzhang announced that in the future, people can only have four dishes and one soup at most, and they must be vegetarian dishes. They can't throw a big banquet, otherwise hell to pay. "Four dishes and one soup" spread from the court to the people and became a model of honesty in past dynasties.
