Just like the New Year's Eve dinner in China, people in countries with Christmas traditions prepare a variety of special and delicious Christmas meals to enjoy with their families*** during the festive season. But apart from gingerbread men and turkey, do you know what other traditional Christmas dishes are served in countries around the world?
Germany
Germany's Christmas goose is a traditional fixture at family feasts across the country, but now roast duck is becoming more popular too.
The Netherlands
Gourmetten (indoor barbecue) is a typical Dutch Christmas dinner tradition, where people sit around a table and cook themselves a small plate of food on a large, hot griddle. The Dutch also like to bake small omelets or pancakes, which are served with a variety of sauces and garlic buttered bread.
Italy
On Christmas Eve, it's traditional in many parts of Italy and in Italian-American communities to enjoy a delicious "Feast of the Seven Fishes". The focus is on preparing seven different kinds of "fish" in seven different ways, with dishes ranging from fried to marinated to tomato salsa.
The Philippines
The tropical climate of the Philippines is ideal for families to gather outdoors to roast suckling pig or whole hog.
Costa Rica
The most authentic Christmas food in Costa Rica is tamales ...... Every family has a secret recipe for tamales. Tamales are usually wrapped in banana leaves and stuffed with meat (pork, chicken or beef), garlic, onions, potatoes, raisins and other ingredients.
Russia
This is definitely the most exotic-sounding dish on the list. Russian "fur herring" is a brightly colored, layered salad that many Russian families enjoy during the Christmas season.
Puerto Rico
arroz con gandules (rice with peas and pigeon meat). The seasonings added to this dish are garlic, oregano, tomato sauce, olive oil, and other ingredients, this dish can be eaten all year round, but at Christmas this is a must eat.
New Orleans
New Orleans is known for its "good times" holiday all-nighters, a French family tradition dating back to the early 1800s. Originally eaten after midnight mass before Christmas Eve, all the dishes at the all-night feast were hearty, but seafood gumbo, soups and game pies were generally likely to be served.
Poland
Dumplings are a traditional Polish holiday treat, with fillings containing mashed potatoes, cottage cheese or sauerkraut. Dumplings are topped with a variety of different toppings, such as melted butter, sautéed onions, or skwarki: a fatty chunk of pork fried to a golden crisp.
Dominica
Residents of the Caribbean island of Dominica (not to be confused with Dominica **** and country) prefer to enjoy a hearty bowl of tripe soup during the holiday season. Christmas tripe soup reflects the island nation's food culture of "eating the animal whole" - they eat the parts of the animal that are usually discarded.
What about it? With so many national Christmas meals to choose from, you'd think that such a formal holiday would be a more reasonable excuse for foodies to get together!
