Origin of labor day
May Day International Labor Day originated from the workers' strike in Chicago, USA 1886. As early as 1866, the first international Geneva conference put forward the slogan of eight-hour working system. Subsequently, on 1 May, 8861day, a large-scale strike and demonstration involving about 350,000 people were held in the United States, centering on Chicago, USA. The demonstrators demanded to improve working conditions and implement an eight-hour working system. 1886 On May 3, the Chicago government sent police to suppress and shot and killed two people, which made the situation worse. On May 4, striking workers held a protest in the Hay Market Square. Because unknown people threw bombs at the police, the police finally shot, and four workers and seven policemen died successively, which was called "Hay Market Riot" or "Hay Market Massacre" in history. In the subsequent verdict, eight anarchists were charged with murder, four anarchists were hanged, and 1 committed suicide in prison.

History of Labor Day in China

Li Dazhao published the History of the May 1st Movement in New Youth, introducing the origin of the May 1st Festival and the activities of workers in the United States, France and other countries to commemorate the May 1st, and calling on China workers to take the May 1st this year as the date of awakening. To celebrate this festival, Chen Duxiu also published the article "Problems of Hunan Women Workers in Shanghai Housheng Cotton Mill", exposing the truth that capitalists exploit workers' surplus value. Chen Duxiu also gave a speech entitled "The Consciousness of Laborers" at the Shanghai Shipyard Workers' Federation, expounding the viewpoints that "labor creates the world" and "people who work are the most useful and valuable". In Beijing, some young people went out to publicize and distribute the May 1st Labor Manifesto, arousing workers to fight against exploitation and fight for their rights. This is the first time that China commemorates the May 1st International Labor Day, and it is also the first May 1st Labor Day in the history of China.
1920_ On the eve of May Day, workers learned to sing "Commemorative Song of May Day" in Changxindian labor tutorial school founded by Deng Zhongxia, a member of Beijing's * * * production group. Its lyrics are: "Beautiful freedom, world star, fight for my blood, sacrifice for him, sweep away all the power system, and remember the good day of May 1st. Red flags fly, take the bright road, do what you can, take what you need, regardless of the rich and the poor, and only help each other. I hope everyone will work hard. " This magnificent and powerful song was composed by the teachers of Changxindian Labor Practice School and the progressive students of Peking University.
